The police apprehended Jay Prakash Majumdar, the Trinamool Congress’ state vice-president in West Bengal, for unlawfully occupying a rented residence in Salt Lake, Kolkata’s northern outskirts. The landlady filed a complaint at the Bidhannagar (North) Police Station, accusing Majumdar of non-payment of rent and abusive behavior towards her.
Majumdar and his wife had been living in the rented accommodation since 2014 at a nominal rent, but he allegedly ceased paying rent over time. The landlady claimed that when she demanded rent or asked him to vacate, Majumdar would intimidate her. The property originally belonged to the landlady’s late husband.
Tensions escalated between Majumdar and the landlady when a dispute arose over locking a section of the residence, leading to protests by local residents. Despite promising to vacate the house, Majumdar was arrested by the Bidhannagar (North) Police Station following public outcry.
Majumdar, who had a varied political journey from Congress to BJP and then to Trinamool Congress, was suspended by the BJP post the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections for alleged anti-party activities. He subsequently joined Trinamool Congress and held the position of state vice-president.
