Amid tight security measures, Trinamool Congress leader Jahangir Khan, also known as ‘Pushpa’ from Falta in South 24 Parganas, appeared in court in Diamond Harbour. The local Bar Association decided not to provide legal representation for him, leading to a significant police presence in and around the court premises to prevent any disturbances. The administration remained vigilant to ensure a smooth legal process without any disruptions.
A case has been registered against Khan, a close aide of Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, under serious and non-bailable sections, necessitating heightened security. The Diamond Harbour Criminal Court Bar Association’s decision not to have any advocate represent Khan has sparked controversy, with the Bar Association secretary stating that no one was willing to defend the accused. Khan faces charges under various serious sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Khan was arrested by the STF of West Bengal Police at the Nepal border while allegedly trying to flee the state. Despite withdrawing from the re-election in Falta Assembly constituency just before polling, Khan’s name remained on the EVM, with the BJP eventually winning the seat by a significant margin. He had been missing since the election results were announced, and a previous case against him saw the withdrawal of protection from coercive action by the Calcutta High Court, leading to his recent arrest.
