Jyotipriya Mallick, a five-time Trinamool Congress legislator and former member of Mamata Banerjee’s Cabinet, has resigned from all organisational roles within the party citing health reasons. Mallick, who previously served as a Minister in the state government, stepped down from the Trinamool Congress’ National Working Committee a week after his appointment, attributing his decision to poor health conditions.
Citing high blood sugar and kidney complications due to diabetes, Mallick expressed his inability to continue his involvement in the party’s organisational activities. Having represented different constituencies over the years, Mallick faced defeat in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections at the hands of the BJP candidate in Habra by a significant margin.
Mallick’s resignation follows his arrest in 2023 by the Enforcement Directorate on charges related to a ration distribution case during his tenure as the food & supplies minister. Despite being released on bail in 2025 after a period of custody, he did not hold any ministerial position thereafter. Renominated as a candidate in the recent elections, Mallick, known for his close association with Mamata Banerjee, faced defeat but continued his role as a party legislator.
