The Trinamool Congress has renamed the West Bengal government’s job guarantee program after Mahatma Gandhi in protest against the Union government’s decision to replace the 20-year-old Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MGNREGA) scheme with the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) or VB-G RAM G scheme. The state government’s job guarantee scheme, formerly known as “Karmashree,” will now be called “Mahatmashree,” according to a notification issued by the State Secretariat, Nabanna. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the renaming during the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS)-2025, emphasizing the importance of honoring Mahatma Gandhi. The scheme, now named “Mahatmashree,” aims to provide up to 75 days of work to beneficiaries, with plans to increase this to 100 days in the future. Banerjee affirmed that the state government will continue to support the scheme even if central funds are halted, emphasizing self-reliance.
