Kolkata, June 2 (IANS) Trinamool Congress councillor Tarun Chakraborty of Ward 87 under Asansol Municipal Corporation in West Burdwan district, West Bengal, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly hoarding government relief materials at his residence, officials said.

He will be produced before a court in Asansol later in the day, police said.

According to the police, most of the relief packages given by the government for the poor people of the area were found in Councillor Tarun Chakraborty’s house. Police said it seized all these relief items from his house.

Police said that apart from the seizure of relief packages, there are several other serious allegations against the Trinamool councillor. He has been accused of being involved in illegal sand trading and extortion in the name of providing financial assistance to the poor for housing projects.

Police said all these allegations will be investigated during custodial interrogation. If the allegations are proven to be true, strict action will be taken against him according to the law, said a police officer.

On the other hand, two other Trinamool Congress workers, identified as Aniruddha Bagh and Balbir Singh, were also arrested on Tuesday. The trio is accused of threatening a resident of Jaanipur and extorting money. They were apprehended from the Kanaipur area on Monday night and will be produced before a Serampore court on Tuesday.

After the BJP formed a government in the state, there has been a crackdown on the illegal and criminal activities of Trinamool Congress leaders.

Recently, Krishnanagar police in Nadia district detained the Trinamool Congress-run Nabadwip Municipality chairman, Biman Krishna Saha, on allegations of illegally stocking relief materials at a local club building near his residence.

Acting on information about large quantities of relief items being stored unlawfully, a Krishnanagar District Police team conducted raids at the club rooms close to Saha’s house in Nabadwip. During the search operation, the police team detected a large amount of relief material, namely trampolines, blankets, and sarees, from ten rooms in that club building.
