A day after being appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly by the Trinamool Congress, Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay called on the newly sworn-in BJP government to uphold the schemes initiated by the previous administration. Chattopadhyay emphasized the importance of treating all individuals equally in Kolkata, known as “Mini-India,” regardless of caste, class, or religion.
He expressed concern over the injustices faced by the common people and urged an immediate halt to such actions, particularly against the underprivileged. Chattopadhyay stressed the need for every citizen to be regarded equally, emphasizing the unity among people of diverse backgrounds in Kolkata and across Bengal.
Highlighting the significance of non-discriminatory treatment, Chattopadhyay emphasized the protection of democratic rights by ensuring equal treatment for all individuals, irrespective of their religious or caste identities. He referenced Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s commitment to upholding the Constitution and urged adherence to its principles for equitable treatment of all citizens.
Chattopadhyay underscored the importance of continuing the existing government schemes that benefit the people of West Bengal, emphasizing the need to sustain the support provided by the previous administration. He called on all political parties to collectively address the prevailing challenges and fulfill their responsibilities in the current political landscape.
Regarding the deployment of central paramilitary forces in the state, Chattopadhyay expressed skepticism about their impartiality, citing concerns over their conduct during the recent elections. In addition to appointing Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition, the Trinamool Congress designated Firhad Hakim as the Chief Whip, along with Asima Patra and Nayna Bandyopadhyay as Deputy Leaders of the Opposition.
