In a move to enhance farmers’ income and promote sustainable agriculture, Tripura’s Power Department, in partnership with the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency, has successfully set up 8,364 solar-powered irrigation pumps. These pumps, installed under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan scheme, aim to benefit farmers and improve agricultural practices. The ongoing installation of an additional 2,531 solar pumps across the state is expected to further support farmers.
Tripura Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath highlighted the positive impact of the project during a visit to the solar-powered agricultural irrigation system in Satdubia village. Under the PM-KUSUM scheme, 8,364 farmers have already reaped the benefits, with more expected to benefit once the ongoing installations are finalized. The scheme, with a financial structure where farmers contribute a minimal amount while the government covers the rest, has significantly aided rural livelihoods and boosted agricultural productivity.
Minister Nath emphasized that each solar pump unit costs around Rs 3 lakh, with farmers contributing only Rs 15,000. The government shoulders the remaining expenses, ensuring wider access to sustainable irrigation practices. Tripura has taken the lead in the Northeast under the PM-KUSUM scheme, with 8,364 farmers already benefiting from the initiative. The state government’s ambitious target to install a total of 10,895 solar irrigation pumps reflects its commitment to enhancing agricultural infrastructure and supporting farmers.
