US President Donald Trump stated that the United States intends to withdraw more troops than the previously mentioned 5,000 from Germany. Trump, speaking before boarding Air Force One in Florida, emphasized plans to significantly reduce troop numbers. A senior defense official had earlier disclosed the Pentagon’s intention to withdraw around 5,000 US troops from Germany.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz faced criticism for his recent comments on the US-Iran conflict, deemed “inappropriate and unhelpful” by an anonymous senior defense official. Merz had previously condemned the US military engagement in Iran as “planless,” sparking tensions. In response, Trump rebuked Merz, questioning his understanding of the situation and his stance on Iran’s nuclear aspirations.
Trump took to social media to hint at a potential troop reduction in Germany, with a final decision expected shortly. Additionally, Trump expressed the possibility of decreasing US military presence in Spain and Italy, citing their perceived lack of support in the US-Israeli conflict with Iran. Trump’s remarks underscored his dissatisfaction with European allies’ contributions to the situation.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul acknowledged Germany’s readiness for a potential decrease in US troop numbers within the country. As of the previous year’s end, over 36,000 US active duty troops, along with reservists and civilians, were stationed across various bases in Germany. Notably, Germany hosts the headquarters of US European Command and US Africa Command, with Ramstein Air Base serving as a vital operational center for US military activities.
