US President Donald Trump presented the Medal of Honor, the highest US military honor, to retired Marine Major James Capers Jr., retired Army Major Nicholas Dockery, and posthumously to Marine Colonel John W. Ripley. The ceremony at the White House honored their exceptional bravery during the Vietnam War and the war in Afghanistan.

Trump praised the three servicemen as embodiments of the courage and sacrifice that define the US armed forces. Capers was acknowledged for his actions during a four-day reconnaissance mission in Vietnam in 1967, where he displayed remarkable leadership despite sustaining severe injuries.

Ripley was posthumously honored for his courageous act during a major North Vietnamese offensive in 1972. He risked his life by repeatedly placing explosives under a bridge under intense enemy fire to halt their advance. Dockery, on the other hand, was recognized for his bravery during a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan in 2012, where he selflessly rescued wounded soldiers and led counter-attacks.

Trump highlighted the selfless acts of these heroes, emphasizing their unwavering dedication to their fellow servicemen in the face of grave danger. The Medal of Honor is awarded to members of the US armed forces who demonstrate exceptional valor and selflessness in the line of duty, above and beyond the call of duty.
