President Donald Trump is considering various options regarding Iran as the White House evaluates how to address the regime’s response to nationwide protests. The administration is cautious about potential US military strikes that could escalate the situation. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that only President Trump and a small team of advisers are aware of his plans.
Leavitt stated that Trump is closely monitoring the situation in Iran while keeping military options open. The President was informed that planned executions in Iran would be halted, resulting in the sparing of 800 lives. The administration’s stance reflects a political debate in Washington on the extent of US involvement as protests continue in Iran.
House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory W. Meeks cautioned against US military action, warning that it could inadvertently harm the protest movement. Meeks stressed that lasting change in Iran should come from the Iranian people’s efforts for freedom and dignity, rather than external military intervention. Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, on the other hand, expressed strong support for Trump’s pressure campaign against Iran.
Lawmakers are also urging action against Iran’s communications blackout, which has isolated protesters. Bipartisan efforts are underway to expand support for internet-freedom technologies to counter state-imposed shutdowns. Additionally, there are calls to condemn Iran’s violent repression, including reported attacks on medical facilities.
