Amid the aftermath of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the largest party, has taken legal action against Governor R.V. Arlekar’s delay in acknowledging their claim to form the state government. A writ petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, registered as Diary Number 28509/2026, and is currently under review.
Following the election results, where TVK secured 108 seats but fell short of the majority mark, the party has garnered support from Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M). The Left parties have pledged their backing to TVK but clarified that they would not be part of the cabinet.
With the additional support, TVK’s strength has increased to 116 MLAs. However, the Governor’s office has requested a list of 118 supporting MLAs before further constitutional proceedings can take place. The party is currently in need of two more MLAs to reach the majority mark for government formation.
