Uganda’s Ministry of Health has implemented additional measures to prevent the spread of Ebola. Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi disclosed that guidelines have been distributed to districts bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the outbreak’s epicenter. Mass gatherings like weddings and market days are suspended, and schools are urged to adhere strictly to health guidelines.
The country has not reported any new Ebola cases in the last five days, with a total of 19 confirmed cases and two deaths. Diana Atwine, the Ministry of Health’s permanent secretary, highlighted that the virus is more concentrated in bodily fluids than in the blood once symptoms manifest. She emphasized the need to avoid sharing cups and utensils to prevent transmission.
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Health Minister Roger Kamba reported 635 confirmed Ebola cases as of June 9. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo Ebola virus, continues to present challenges, although the response is gaining momentum. Kamba noted an increase in recovered patients and improved contact tracing efforts.
Eight new recoveries were announced, bringing the total to 30, with a message to seek early treatment as it saves lives. The DRC declared the Ebola outbreak on May 15, with the World Health Organization declaring it a public health emergency of international concern two days later.
