The United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP) strongly criticized the Pakistani security forces for firing on peaceful protesters in Rawalakot, PoK, resulting in casualties. The UKPNP labeled the incident a “massacre” and emphasized the importance of respecting the democratic right to peaceful protest. Urging immediate intervention, the organization called on the UN and global community to safeguard the lives and rights of Kashmiris.
The UKPNP also appealed to international media and human rights groups to report on the ground situation in PoK. Tensions escalated in Rawalakot after authorities cracked down on activists associated with the Jammu & Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (J&KJAAC). The region witnessed protests and disruptions in communication due to internet suspensions since June 5.
Protests have spread beyond Rawalakot to other parts of PoK, including Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, Tata Pani, and Plandari. The deaths of J&KJAAC members during demonstrations have fueled public outrage, with protesters alleging excessive use of force by security forces. The situation in PoK has garnered international attention, with solidarity demonstrations in the UK and concerns raised about human rights conditions at global forums.
