Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced the establishment of the ‘High-Level Committee on Demographic Change’ to address issues like infiltration leading to unnatural demographic shifts in the country. This committee, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2025, aims to assess population changes caused by infiltration and other factors.
Amit Shah emphasized the significance of combating unnatural demographic changes, stating that they pose a substantial challenge to any nation’s present and future. The committee will be headed by Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar (Retd) and will include members such as the Census Commissioner, Durga Shankar Mishra (Retd IAS), Balaji Srivastava (Retd IPS), and Dr. Shamika Ravi.
According to Shah, demographic change is a critical issue affecting national sovereignty, security, law and order, social structure, and tribal society preservation. The committee’s mandate includes evaluating demographic shifts due to illegal immigration, analyzing abnormal population movements among religious and social groups, and proposing timely solutions.
Prime Minister Modi, in a previous Independence Day speech, highlighted the government’s commitment to preventing infiltrators from encroaching on tribal lands. He stressed the threat posed by infiltrators to national security and the livelihood of the youth, leading to the initiation of a high-powered demography mission.
