Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the allocation of a 30 GHz radio frequency by the Department of Telecommunications to enhance vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems, aiming to reduce road accidents and fatalities. He emphasized the importance of conducting regular Members of Parliament Road Safety Committee meetings at the district level, involving various authorities like the district collector, police, and PWD. The recent consultative committee meeting of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways focused on adopting a comprehensive strategy to minimize road accidents and save lives.
Gadkari highlighted the integration of road safety measures in the finalization of Detailed Project Reports and instructed officials to actively participate in the Members of Parliament Road Safety Committee meetings for implementing suitable safety measures in ongoing projects. Additionally, he mentioned the sharing of AI-based road safety applications with states and Union Territories, encouraging members to provide detailed feedback for further evaluation.
The minister introduced the Road Safety Anthem, available in 22 regional languages, and urged Members of Parliament to promote its dissemination in schools and public events. He commended the efforts towards enhancing road infrastructure safety nationwide and reiterated the government’s commitment to reducing road fatalities. Chairman of NHAI, Santosh Kumar Yadav, briefed the committee on ongoing initiatives to improve road safety on National Highways.
During the meeting, concerns were raised regarding the high number of road accidents and fatalities nationwide. Members highlighted issues such as rectification of black spots, expansion of specific National Highway sections, provision of trauma care facilities along highways, increased compensation for accident victims, road maintenance, and collaboration with state governments for state highways.
