Union Minister Piyush Goyal praised the Madras High Court’s ruling allowing the Deepastham ritual at Thiruparankundram Hill, calling it a victory for devotees and religious freedom. He criticized the Tamil Nadu government’s concerns about law and order as baseless, labeling them as political tactics. The court’s judgment was seen as a rebuke to the DMK-led government for obstructing the traditional practice associated with Lord Murugan.
The High Court’s decision was hailed by Goyal as a defense of the ancient Deepastham ritual, which had been halted by the DMK government, leading devotees to seek legal intervention. Goyal condemned the impeachment motion against Justice G.R. Swaminathan by the INDI alliance, accusing them of trying to influence the judiciary. He warned against undermining democratic institutions through such actions and emphasized the importance of upholding religious traditions within the framework of the law.
Goyal highlighted the need for politics free from appeasement or hostility towards faith, stressing that India values all religions equally. He urged the people of Tamil Nadu and the nation to reject divisive politics and uphold the principles of the Constitution and the Judiciary. The court’s ruling, according to Goyal, serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving ancient customs and religious beliefs in a democratic society.
