Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat lauded the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as a significant milestone in India’s economic progress. He emphasized that the FTA would not only bolster bilateral trade but also create new job opportunities for the youth and spur economic growth. Shekhawat credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic efforts for this achievement, highlighting the government’s focus on national interests.
Shekhawat expressed optimism about the FTA’s potential to enhance economic collaboration between India and the UK, benefiting various sectors such as industries, exporters, MSMEs, and services. He emphasized that the agreement would pave the way for employment generation, innovation, and skill development among the youth in India. Additionally, he stated that the FTA aligns with India’s strategy to strengthen economic ties globally and elevate its status as a key economic player.
In response to comments by former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill, Shekhawat criticized the Congress party for its inconsistent stance on women’s political empowerment. He contrasted the government’s proactive approach under PM Modi’s leadership, highlighting the introduction of the Women’s Reservation Bill as a testament to prioritizing women’s active involvement in governance and nation-building.
Shekhawat underscored the government’s commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in all spheres, emphasizing the significance of the Women’s Reservation Bill as a landmark reform towards achieving this goal. He dismissed opposition criticism of the legislation as resistance to women’s increasing political representation, reaffirming the government’s dedication to expanding opportunities for women in leadership roles and public life.
