Even as weight-reducing or anti-obesity drugs gain popularity in India, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh emphasized the need for their careful use. Speaking at the opening of the 2-day “Asia Oceania Conference on Obesity,” Singh advocated for a comprehensive societal approach to tackle obesity, a significant public health issue in India. He highlighted that obesity is a complex health condition, not just a cosmetic concern, and warned against the proliferation of unscientific claims and quick-fix solutions that can mislead individuals from seeking evidence-based care.
Singh noted the alarming increase in non-communicable diseases in India, with conditions like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers being linked to obesity, contributing to 63% of overall mortality. He also underscored the health risks associated with central or visceral obesity, prevalent among Indians, which go beyond overall body weight.
The Minister stressed that addressing obesity requires a multidisciplinary approach involving social, cultural, and environmental factors, not just medical professionals. He mentioned the government’s efforts, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to combat obesity and lifestyle-related diseases through initiatives like FIT India and Khelo India, promoting small, sustainable changes in food habits and daily routines.
Singh emphasized the importance of raising awareness among younger generations beyond medical circles, stating that safeguarding the health of India’s youth is crucial for the nation’s development goals by 2047.
