Union Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Jitan Ram Manjhi created a stir with his comments on population during a media address in Gaya. He emphasized the need for a broader perspective on population growth and childbearing, cautioning against a narrow-minded approach. Manjhi’s statements were in response to comments made by Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, also known as Bageshwar Baba, who reportedly suggested having four children and dedicating one to the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS).
Manjhi highlighted the importance of not limiting oneself when it comes to population expansion and family planning. He stressed that individuals are not just mouths to feed but possess the potential to contribute significantly through work and innovation. The Minister pointed out that with the right opportunities and effective governance, every individual can be supported, regardless of population size.
Reflecting on India’s current population of around 1.4 billion, Manjhi drew a parallel with ancient times when India, despite a large population, was considered a global leader. He clarified that while he does not advocate uncontrolled population growth, he emphasized the necessity of focusing on education, skill development, and entrepreneurship as the population increases.
Manjhi’s remarks have ignited discussions in political circles, with many speculating that it could escalate the ongoing discourse on population policies in Bihar. The Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), the ideological arm of the BJP, has consistently advocated for a higher birth rate among the Hindu population in India.
