The United States and India have initiated a new collaborative effort to enhance their fight against drug trafficking and narco-terrorism. The US-India Drug Policy Executive Working Group convened in Washington from January 20 to 21, as per a White House statement. Sara Carter, from the Office of National Drug Control Policy, stressed the significance of this partnership in addressing the drug crisis as a core national security concern.

India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, highlighted India’s strong commitment to combatting narcotics trafficking, including the regulation of precursor chemicals essential for illicit drug production. Kwatra emphasized the need for a balanced approach that combines robust enforcement with the facilitation of legal trade, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector.

The working group, co-chaired by Acting ONDCP Deputy Director Debbie Seguin and India’s Narcotics Control Bureau Deputy Director General Monika Ashish Batra, aims to achieve concrete outcomes in advancing counter-narcotics collaboration. Both countries have pledged to intensify joint efforts to dismantle illegal drug production and trafficking networks that pose threats to communities in the US and India.

US and Indian officials underscored the necessity of a comprehensive, cross-agency approach to combat the drug menace effectively. They also emphasized the importance of safeguarding the pharmaceutical supply chain while ensuring that anti-diversion measures align with national regulations and do not disrupt lawful industries.

The recent joint operations targeting illicit narcotics trafficking networks have set the foundation for the working group’s endeavors. US and Indian representatives view this initiative as a testament to their shared commitment to combatting the global drug challenge and promoting safety and public health within their nations.

The collaboration between the US and India in the realm of security has broadened in recent years, encompassing areas like counterterrorism and law enforcement coordination. Counter-narcotics efforts have gained prominence within this partnership, given the transnational nature of drug trafficking networks that intersect with organized crime and terrorism.
