US Congressman Ro Khanna emphasized that as India grows economically and strategically, it should step up as a global power and take on more international duties. Speaking at the Capitol Hill Summit 2026, organized by the US-India Friendship Council, Khanna highlighted that India’s expanding influence comes with responsibilities beyond regional matters and economic progress. He stressed the importance of India defining its role in world leadership and not shying away from global obligations.
Khanna pointed out that India, with its strong ties to Russia, could play a positive role in resolving the Ukraine conflict diplomatically. He urged India to adapt to the geopolitical realities of the 21st century and take clearer stances on global crises. Despite past trade tensions, Khanna affirmed the enduring strategic significance of the US-India relationship, supported by both Democrats and Republicans in Congress.
The congressman advocated for enhanced collaboration between the US and India, particularly in defense, technology, and security in the Indo-Pacific region. While praising the bipartisan support for closer ties, Khanna criticized certain individuals within the Trump administration for their anti-Indian stance. He called for a values-based partnership between the two democracies, emphasizing the promotion of pluralism, democratic values, and international cooperation.
Khanna shared his personal journey as an Indian American in politics, recalling the encouragement he received from Swadesh Chatterjee, chairman of the US-India Friendship Council. Representing California’s 17th Congressional District, Khanna has become a prominent voice in Congress on technology, democracy, and foreign policy issues.
