A senior Seoul official revealed that a planned visit to South Korea by a US delegation for security talks is facing delays due to scheduling conflicts. The delegation was expected to discuss various security matters, including Seoul’s plans for nuclear-powered submarines and cooperation on nuclear energy and shipbuilding. Concerns have emerged that recent US Supreme Court decisions on tariffs could impact negotiations between Seoul and Washington.
The delay in the US delegation’s trip is attributed to scheduling challenges, with the Seoul official emphasizing that trade issues are not the cause. Factors such as the US political landscape, the Iran situation, Russia’s conflict with Ukraine, and upcoming US-China talks are contributing to the delay in progress. South Korea remains open to sending officials to the US if the delegation’s visit is further postponed.
Efforts are underway to implement a joint summit agreement that includes US support for South Korea’s submarine construction plans and rights for uranium enrichment and spent fuel reprocessing. Additionally, South Korea’s Defence Minister lodged a protest with US Forces Korea over an incident involving Chinese fighter jets during a recent air exercise.
