The United States, Israel, and Lebanon signed a trilateral framework agreement in Washington aimed at ending conflict along Israel’s northern border. This agreement, facilitated by the US, is seen as a crucial step towards restoring Lebanese sovereignty and creating a pathway for Hezbollah’s disarmament. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the significance of this agreement, calling it a foundation for lasting peace and security.
The framework agreement focuses on restoring Lebanon’s sovereignty, dismantling Hezbollah’s military infrastructure, and allowing Israeli forces to return to their borders once security threats are eliminated. The State Department highlighted that the agreement sets a structured process for these objectives and establishes a Military Coordination Group for Lebanon, overseen by the US, to aid in implementation.
While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Rubio expressed optimism about the agreement’s potential impact. He stressed that this agreement signifies the beginning of a crucial journey towards peace and security for both Lebanon and Israel. Rubio also emphasized the suffering of the Lebanese people due to external interference and the importance of creating a prosperous and peaceful nation for them.
Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad and Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter both praised the agreement as a significant step towards restoring Lebanese sovereignty and enhancing regional security. The State Department announced its commitment to supporting the agreement’s implementation, including providing humanitarian aid and financial assistance to Lebanon for strengthening its sovereignty.
