The US Department of Justice has defended its decision to dismiss criminal charges against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani and seven others. The department argued that prosecutors have the authority to end prosecutions and that the case had legal and practical flaws. The charges were dropped due to the alleged conduct mainly occurring in India, where authorities found no actionable misconduct.
The Justice Department explained that investors did not suffer financial losses as debt offerings were repaid, and evidence and witnesses were in India. None of the defendants appeared in US court, and the charges against Adani were deemed inappropriate. The department stated that the case did not meet guidelines prioritizing US national interests or significant harm to US businesses.
The filing also refuted claims of influence by Adani companies’ potential investments in the US. It clarified that the decision to drop charges was not based on promises of investments. The department emphasized that the case lacked ties to criminal organizations, US companies, or national security threats, and had been investigated in India.
