The United States has initiated a significant naval mission in the Strait of Hormuz to support stranded commercial ships and reinstate traffic along a crucial oil route. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Iran of unlawfully impeding global commerce, leading to the operation named “Project Freedom.” Nearly 23,000 individuals from 87 nations are marooned on commercial vessels due to what Rubio termed an Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Rubio highlighted the dire situation faced by the stranded sailors and crew members, emphasizing the urgency of the issue. He condemned Iran’s actions as acts of piracy, alleging the placement of mines in international waters and targeting of commercial ships. The US operation, as described by Rubio, aims at providing a defensive shield for commercial shipping, ensuring safe passage through the strait.
The defensive nature of the US operation was reiterated by Rubio, emphasizing that it only responds to threats. US naval and air assets are actively safeguarding commercial vessels, with two US-flagged ships already crossing the strait safely. The operation involves guided missile destroyers, over 100 aircraft, unmanned systems, and approximately 15,000 US military personnel, according to Rubio.
Rubio emphasized the importance of preventing Iran from asserting control over the vital shipping lane. He underscored the need for international condemnation and action, including efforts at the United Nations. Rubio mentioned that the US was approached by several countries seeking assistance, highlighting the unique capability of the US to swiftly project military power in the region.
