US lawmakers from both parties are increasing pressure on President Donald Trump before his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. They are calling on Trump to address issues such as North Korean refugees, political prisoners, trade barriers, fentanyl, and American manufacturing during the summit. Congressman James Walkinshaw and Senator Tim Kaine are among those urging Trump to confront China on forcibly returning North Korean refugees, highlighting the risks these individuals face upon return.
The lawmakers emphasized that China is violating its obligations under the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention by repatriating North Koreans despite knowing the dangers awaiting them. They pointed out that Chinese authorities are sending hundreds of North Koreans back to face mistreatment and retribution. The appeal, signed by various lawmakers, referenced a report indicating that China forcibly repatriated a significant number of North Korean refugees in recent months.
In a separate effort, House lawmakers led by Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington are pushing for the removal of China’s 10% tariff on American cotton during trade negotiations. They highlighted the importance of China for US cotton exports, noting a significant decline in exports due to retaliatory actions by China. The lawmakers underscored China’s substantial role in global textile consumption, emphasizing the impact of trade relations on the cotton industry.
Senate Democrats, including Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, criticized Trump for what they perceive as weakening America’s strategic position against China. They accused the Trump administration of policy failures, particularly regarding export controls, alliances, and the flow of fentanyl into the US. Schumer warned against concessions to China that could harm American manufacturing and national security, expressing concerns about potential negative outcomes for the US.
Meanwhile, the House is preparing to vote on a resolution urging Trump to raise concerns about political prisoners during his discussions with Xi. The resolution highlighted various cases, including that of detained individuals in Hong Kong, pastors, Uyghur detainees, and American citizens imprisoned in China. Congressman Chris Smith emphasized the importance of addressing these human rights issues during talks with Chinese officials. The Trump-Xi summit occurs amid escalating tensions between the two nations on multiple fronts.
