A senior US State Department official has emphasized India’s significance as a key strategic ally for the United States. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Bethany Poulos Morrison, spoke at an event in Capitol Hill, underscoring the deepening cooperation between the two nations in trade, technology, energy, and defense. Morrison described the US-India relationship as pivotal, with a focus on various areas including artificial intelligence, energy security, and defense collaboration.
Morrison, who transitioned to the State Department after a tenure in the US Senate, expressed her deliberate choice to oversee India and South Asia affairs due to the relationship’s critical nature for Washington. She praised the Indian-American community for its substantial contributions to America’s economic landscape, highlighting the leadership roles played by Indian Americans in prominent companies like Microsoft, Google, and IBM.
The momentum in bilateral ties was evident during Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent visit to India, covering multiple cities. Morrison emphasized tangible outcomes over symbolic gestures in the partnership, pointing out the administration’s focus on achieving concrete results. Trade was a key focus, with discussions on a significant trade agreement between the US and India to enhance economic ties.
On the technology front, Morrison highlighted the Trust Initiative launched by Presidents Trump and Modi, aimed at fostering collaboration in key technologies like artificial intelligence and semiconductors. Energy cooperation and defense partnerships were also underscored as crucial pillars of the US-India relationship, with a strong emphasis on people-to-people connections as a cornerstone for sustaining the partnership.
