US President Donald Trump has signed a significant funding package, bringing an end to a partial government shutdown that commenced on Saturday. The bill cleared the House of Representatives on Tuesday and had received Senate approval on Friday, as per Xinua news agency. This funding package will support various US federal agencies until the fiscal year’s end on September 30.
The funded agencies encompass the Department of Defence, the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Labor, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Notably, funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been excluded from the omnibus package. Instead, the DHS will receive a two-week continuing resolution at current funding levels to facilitate ongoing negotiations on immigration enforcement between both parties and the White House.
Following two fatal shootings by federal enforcement personnel in Minneapolis, Democrats are advocating for operational changes within immigration agencies. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer emphasized the necessity of legislative reforms to rein in and overhaul Immigration and Customs Enforcement before the DHS funding bill can secure Senate approval. The escalating political divide between the Republican and Democratic parties has frequently plunged the US federal government into shutdown crises or near-shutdown situations. Just over two months ago, a historic 43-day federal government shutdown had concluded.
