United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that his upcoming visit to India is close, stating, “We are about to leave.” The discussions during the visit are expected to revolve around the Quad alliance, regional security, China, and the expansion of strategic ties. Rubio shared his anticipation for the trip, scheduled for later this month, without specifying the exact dates.
The visit is occurring against a backdrop of increased geopolitical uncertainties in the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East. Both the US and India are looking to enhance their collaboration on security, maritime issues, and emerging technologies. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor expressed excitement about welcoming Secretary Rubio, highlighting the value placed on the growing partnership between the two countries.
In addition to engaging in bilateral meetings with Indian officials in New Delhi, Rubio is set to participate in the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting, which involves India, the US, Japan, and Australia. Mukesh Aghi, President and CEO of US India Strategic and Partnership Forum, emphasized the significance of Rubio’s visit amid current regional challenges, stressing the need for stronger strategic coordination among Quad nations.
Discussions between Washington and New Delhi are expected to encompass maritime security concerns related to the Strait of Hormuz and their broader impact on regional stability. Aghi underscored the importance of reviving the Quad alliance, particularly in light of challenges in the Middle East. He also mentioned that India seeks clarity on recent diplomatic engagements with China and their potential implications for the region.
The visit is deemed timely by Aghi, who anticipates that it will address various issues affecting both countries on multiple fronts.
