US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized Cuba’s leadership, labeling it a “failed state” and expressing concerns about its impact on US national security. Rubio highlighted the broken political and economic system in Cuba, accusing the government of hindering humanitarian aid while benefiting military-linked entities. He emphasized the need for humanitarian relief to be channeled through organizations independent of the Cuban regime.
Rubio revealed that the US had earmarked $6 million in aid for Cuba post-hurricane, with half already distributed through the Catholic Church. He raised alarm over a military-associated entity, “GUYA,” controlling substantial wealth while ordinary Cubans suffered from power outages and economic turmoil. Additionally, Rubio pointed out Cuba’s security implications for the US due to its proximity and relationships with Russia and China.
The Secretary of State warned of potential migration and instability in the US if Cuba experiences a systemic breakdown. While emphasizing a preference for diplomatic solutions, Rubio noted that military action could be considered if necessary to address national security threats. Rubio stressed the importance of addressing the situation in Cuba to prevent adverse consequences for the US.
