The United States, led by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, has covertly ensured the safe passage of over 100 million barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz amid tensions with Iran. Hegseth revealed details of the operation at the US Central Command headquarters in Florida, emphasizing the importance of keeping the energy corridor open while exerting pressure on Tehran.
Hegseth disclosed the existence of “Project Freedom,” a clandestine initiative to safeguard commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This operation, largely undisclosed to the public, has successfully facilitated the transit of a significant volume of oil under American protection, out of Iran’s reach.
The Pentagon chief highlighted the strategic significance of the operation, noting that more than 100 million barrels of oil have been securely transported through the narrow waterway due to US intervention. Hegseth emphasized the role of the United States in ensuring the uninterrupted flow of oil shipments, even during nighttime operations that remain unseen and impervious to Iranian interference.
The US military’s efforts in the region extend beyond protecting commercial shipping, with a focus on limiting Iranian oil exports while upholding international maritime security. Recent actions by US forces include the disabling of a tanker attempting to transport Iranian oil, as part of ongoing measures to enforce compliance in the Gulf of Oman.
CENTCOM reported that since the blockade’s initiation in April, US forces have disabled eight non-compliant vessels, redirected numerous ships, and facilitated the passage of humanitarian aid on 42 vessels. Hegseth underscored the transformative impact of American military operations in the Gulf, asserting US control over the vital Strait of Hormuz.
By combining maritime operations with targeted military actions against Iranian capabilities, the United States has significantly shifted the power dynamics in the region. Hegseth emphasized the comprehensive approach taken by US forces, which have effectively countered Iranian naval, air force, and defense capabilities, reinforcing America’s strategic position in the Gulf.
