The United States has inked a deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to enhance Washington’s sports diplomacy endeavors. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed the agreement with UFC executives, lauding the organization as a symbol of American entrepreneurship and a unifying platform. This move aligns with the Trump administration’s strategy to bolster America’s global outreach through popular culture.
The agreement integrates UFC into the State Department’s expanding array of sports partnerships. Officials aim to leverage the worldwide appeal of sports to promote international engagement and foster connections among people. Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy Darren Beattie Rogers emphasized the unifying power of sports, transcending disagreements on other fronts.
UFC, described as the “United Nations of fighting” by Rubio, boasts fighters and champions from diverse nationalities. Lawrence Epstein, UFC’s chief operating officer, highlighted the organization’s global footprint, with over 75 countries represented among its fighters. Rubio commended UFC’s evolution into a global sports brand, reflecting the American spirit of pursuing once-deemed impossible ideas.
The Secretary of State also pointed out the international allure of UFC events, noting the keen interest shown by world leaders in attending. UFC President Dana White emphasized the sport’s universal appeal, emphasizing its ability to unite audiences across linguistic and national boundaries. The upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations of the United States are set to include a UFC event at the White House, showcasing American soft power on a global scale.
Sports diplomacy has emerged as a key element of US foreign engagement efforts, with preparations underway for major international sporting events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games.
