Two American tourists were held for questioning at Srinagar international airport when a satellite phone was found in their luggage. The police stated that possession of satellite phones in India requires prior authorization due to regulations. Failure to declare such devices upon entry can lead to legal consequences.

The discovery of the restricted communication device prompted security measures, resulting in the detention of the tourists for verification. In India, the use of satellite phones without permission is prohibited under the Indian Telegraph Act. Individuals must obtain licenses and declare all devices to customs when entering the country.

Authorities are investigating the purpose of the tourists’ visit and their compliance with regulatory procedures. Unauthorized possession of satellite phones can lead to severe penalties, including potential arrest and fines. It is crucial to adhere to the country’s regulations regarding communication devices to avoid legal issues.
