India continued to be a significant trading partner of the United States in November, as per official data. The US trade deficit surged to $56.8 billion during the month, almost doubling from the previous month. This deficit arises when a country imports more goods and services than it exports.
In November, the US faced a goods trade deficit of $4.4 billion with India, placing India among the nations with which the US had notable trade imbalances. The overall scenario saw US exports decline to $292.1 billion while imports rose to $348.9 billion, leading to the escalation of the deficit. The surge was primarily driven by goods trade, although the US maintained a surplus in services.
The US encountered its largest goods trade deficits with Mexico, Vietnam, Taiwan, China, and the European Union in November. Among major economies, deficits with Germany, Japan, and India were notable. Conversely, the US recorded goods trade surpluses with countries like Switzerland, Netherlands, South and Central America, and the United Kingdom.
Exports of goods decreased in November, attributed to lower shipments of various products, while services exports saw a slight increase. Notably, consumer goods imports rose significantly, including pharmaceuticals, while capital goods imports surged, particularly in computers and semiconductors.
On a year-to-date basis, the US goods and services trade deficit expanded by 4.1 percent compared to the same period last year. Both exports and imports witnessed growth, with imports rising at a faster pace. The upcoming US trade report, encompassing December and full-year 2025 data, is set for release on February 19, 2026.
India and the US have been strengthening their trade relations across various sectors, including pharmaceuticals, industrial products, and services like information technology and business outsourcing. The trade data between the two countries are closely monitored in India for insights into export demand, global economic conditions, and trends in one of India’s crucial overseas markets.
