US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer is set to travel to India this week to meet with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and other senior Indian officials. The purpose of the visit is to advance negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement between Washington and New Delhi. The talks are part of the broader US-India Bilateral Trade Agreement negotiations initiated by President Donald J. Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2025.
Greer’s visit to New Delhi follows recent discussions between US and Indian negotiators, with both sides expressing optimism about nearing a trade agreement. The trip is also in line with recent statements made by Donald Trump, who mentioned that the two countries are close to finalizing a trade deal. The agenda for the visit includes discussions on the historic United States–India Joint Statement, the Interim Agreement, and broader bilateral trade negotiations.
After the meetings in India, Ambassador Greer will proceed to Tashkent, where he is scheduled to hold discussions with key Uzbek officials. The focus of these meetings will be on achieving fair, balanced, and reciprocal trade with the United States. The negotiations between the US and India aim to strengthen economic ties across various sectors such as technology, manufacturing, energy, pharmaceuticals, and critical supply chains.
The trade discussions are part of a larger effort by both countries to establish a comprehensive trade framework that supports deeper strategic cooperation. Greer has acknowledged the challenges in market access issues with India but highlighted the joint framework agreement that guides ongoing negotiations. The US and India are also expanding their strategic partnership in areas like defence, emerging technologies, critical minerals, education, and people-to-people ties.
