Ahead of World Environment Day on June 5, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called upon the people of the state to actively engage in environmental preservation efforts. He emphasized the importance of water conservation, river rejuvenation, and tree planting as part of this initiative. Adityanath highlighted that protecting nature is deeply ingrained in India’s Sanatan tradition and should be seen as a collective responsibility rather than a mere annual ritual.
In a message to the residents of Uttar Pradesh, the Chief Minister underscored the significance of revering nature, citing the long-standing tradition in Sanatan culture of honoring trees, mountains, rivers, and living beings. He pointed out that the Vedas consider the worship of nature equivalent to the worship of God Himself. Adityanath also mentioned that Indian philosophy views elements of nature like fire, air, water, and earth as divine manifestations.
Adityanath stressed the importance of World Environment Day as an opportunity to express gratitude towards nature. He urged that this day should not be a mere customary observance but a demonstration of collective commitment and appreciation for the environment. Highlighting the deep-rooted connection between society and nature, the Chief Minister referenced cultural traditions and festivals like Vat Savitri Vrat, Chhath, and Maha Kumbh, which symbolize the strong bond between Indian culture and the natural world.
The Chief Minister drew attention to the concept of ‘Dev Rin’ in the Sanatan tradition, emphasizing the direct link between indebtedness to the divine and the conservation of nature, forests, land, and water resources. Adityanath emphasized that the protection of trees, water bodies, and rivers has become more crucial than ever, stating that “Jal hai to hum hain” (If there is water, there is life) is not just a saying but the essence of life itself.
Adityanath mentioned the environmental progress in Uttar Pradesh, noting that the state now boasts 12 Ramsar sites, including the recently added Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary. He also highlighted the success of the ‘One District, One River’ initiative, showcasing how collaborative efforts between society and the government can aid in the restoration and preservation of natural ecosystems.
Encouraging the youth to champion environmental protection, the Chief Minister called on them to lead initiatives in water conservation, cleanliness drives, afforestation, and river protection campaigns. He also urged children to plant and nurture at least one sapling annually on their birthdays or special occasions. Adityanath concluded by appealing to citizens to pledge on World Environment Day to safeguard nature, conserve water sources, and protect trees, emphasizing that a safe, clean, and prosperous environment is fundamental to a developed state and a secure future.
