The Government of Uttar Pradesh has officially established the “Uttar Pradesh State Rural Local Bodies Dedicated Backward Classes Commission.” This move aims to address the representation of backward classes in the state’s rural local governing bodies. The commission’s role includes evaluating and ensuring legal frameworks for Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation in Panchayati Raj institutions.
The newly formed commission, approved by the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, consists of a five-member panel. Justice Ram Autar Singh, a retired judge of the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, has been appointed as the chairman. The remaining positions on the panel will be held by retired judicial and administrative officers, including Brijesh Kumar, Santosh Kumar Vishwakarma, Dr. Arvind Kumar Chaurasiya, and S.P. Singh.
The chairman and members of the commission will serve for six months from assuming office. Their tasks include conducting inquiries into backwardness across rural local bodies and compiling recommendation reports. The state government will later issue orders on honorarium, financial allowances, and operational facilities for the panel. This strategic initiative is expected to impact rural panchayat elections and ensure fair reservation practices.
