Varanasi’s traditional art of Pink Meenakari, known for its enamel work, is now attracting international attention. Crafted by artisans in Kashi, this jewelry is leaving a mark both locally and overseas. The delicate Pink Meenakari, also called Gulabi Meenakari, is a unique art form native to Varanasi.
Its recent recognition under the Geographical Indication (GI) tag has sparked a surge in demand, not only in India but also in global markets. Foreign clients often provide customized designs based on their preferences and modern trends. Varanasi’s craftsmen then skillfully create exquisite jewelry, showcasing the intricate detailing typical of Pink Meenakari.
Ramesh Kumar Vishwakarma, a national award-winning Pink Meenakari artist, mentioned his family’s legacy in this art dating back to 1982. He attributed the global recognition of this craft to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gifts made of Pink Meenakari were presented by the Prime Minister to foreign dignitaries at international events, enhancing the art’s global reputation.
Vishwakarma’s jewelry has been featured at various international platforms, such as the Dubai Expo, significantly boosting his business. He acknowledged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) initiative for expanding markets and elevating Pink Meenakari’s status. Orders are pouring in from countries like Australia, France, Germany, the US, Israel, Italy, Canada, and Dubai.
The demand for Pink Meenakari jewelry from Varanasi is steadily increasing among international buyers. This trend allows artisans like Vishwakarma to proudly showcase Varanasi’s rich cultural heritage on a global scale.
