In a significant move before the Kerala Assembly elections, veteran Congress leader K. Babu has announced his retirement from electoral politics. Babu, a six-time MLA from Tripunithura, conveyed his decision to step away from active politics to senior party members. Despite being asked by Congress leadership to contest again from his constituency, Babu has made it clear that he will no longer participate in electoral activities.
Known for his organizational skills, the 74-year-old Babu was a close associate of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. He served as the Excise Minister in the Chandy-led government from 2011 to 2016, a period marred by the bar license controversy that put him under political pressure.
Following allegations raised by the CPI(M)-led Opposition, Babu faced investigations by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau from 2016 onwards, leading to a challenging phase in his public life. Despite these challenges and health issues, Babu decided to re-enter the electoral arena in 2021 to clear his name.
Babu’s victory in the Tripunithura seat in 2021, defeating CPI(M) leader M. Swaraj, was closely watched. However, his recent decision to retire from electoral politics has opened up a significant Congress stronghold in Ernakulam district, impacting candidate selection. With Babu’s exit, there is a notable shift in the party’s leadership as it gears up for the upcoming electoral battle.
