Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and the courageous freedom fighters involved in the historic Dandi Satyagraha. PM Modi, in a social media post, acknowledged the commencement of the Dandi March on this day in 1930, honoring the significant personalities associated with it. Vice President Radhalkrishnan also highlighted the importance of the Dandi Satyagraha, initiated under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership, as a pivotal moment in India’s freedom struggle, emphasizing the values of truth and non-violence.
The Salt March, alternatively known as the Salt Satyagraha, Dandi March, and Dandi Satyagraha, was a peaceful act of civil disobedience led by Mahatma Gandhi during colonial India. On March 12, 1930, Gandhi initiated the Salt March from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad to Dandi village in Gujarat, protesting against the oppressive salt tax imposed by the British. This historic march, lasting 24 days, played a crucial role in the Civil Disobedience Movement, symbolizing the beginning of a widespread resistance against British oppression.
Under British rule, Indians were prohibited from collecting or selling salt and were compelled to purchase it at high prices from the British authorities. Gandhi’s symbolic act of producing salt illegally at Dandi beach sparked a nationwide movement of civil disobedience, with millions across India breaking the salt laws. Initially joined by around 80 individuals, the Salt March gained momentum as it progressed, attracting over 50,000 participants along the 390 km route, garnering both national and international attention for its peaceful and impactful nature.
