In a significant political move in Tamil Nadu, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has backed the Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), helping the party surpass the 118 MLA majority mark needed to establish the government. TVK leader C. Joseph Vijay met Governor-in-Charge Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to formally assert their readiness to govern. This marks Vijay’s fourth meeting with the Governor in as many days.
The recent Tamil Nadu elections, held for all 234 Assembly constituencies on April 23, witnessed a fierce competition among the DMK, AIADMK, Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), and TVK. Despite initially falling short of the majority, TVK emerged as the largest party with 108 seats after the May 4 results were announced. Subsequently, intense political negotiations ensued in Chennai, with TVK engaging with various parties and independent legislators to garner support for forming the government.
With the VCK and IUML now officially offering their support, TVK has reportedly secured backing from 120 legislators, paving the way for Vijay to approach the Governor to stake a claim for government formation. Vijay is seeking an urgent meeting with Governor Arlekar before his anticipated departure to Kerala to submit support letters from allied parties and legislators, signaling his intent to lead Tamil Nadu as the next Chief Minister.
TVK’s general secretary Aadhav Arjuna presented the support document to the media, confirming Vijay’s imminent oath-taking ceremony as the Chief Minister. The unfolding political events have sparked jubilation among TVK supporters statewide, while political analysts closely watch Raj Bhavan for the Governor’s next steps amid the evolving government formation process.
