The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has scheduled an announcement at 4 P.M. today regarding its stance on backing the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government formation attempt in Tamil Nadu. Actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s TVK is nearing the majority mark needed to establish the next government in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. TVK, having garnered support from various parties, is just two MLAs away from comfortably surpassing the halfway mark.
TVK leaders have formally approached VCK President Thol. Thirumavalavan seeking assistance for government formation, with a letter sent to the VCK leadership on behalf of TVK as efforts to solidify numbers intensify in Chennai. The VCK’s decision is being closely monitored by political circles in the State, as its support could be pivotal in determining whether Vijay will be invited to lead the government.
Senior VCK leaders engaged in internal discussions prior to the announcement, while party members and political analysts awaited clarity on the party’s final stance. The Tamil Nadu Assembly election, held on April 23, resulted in a fractured mandate with no single party securing a clear majority. TVK emerged as the largest party with 108 seats, reshaping the State’s political landscape and positioning Vijay at the forefront of government formation discussions.
The Congress and Left parties have already pledged support to TVK, bolstering Vijay’s position. However, uncertainty looms over whether the numbers will be adequate for Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to invite TVK to form the government. Speculation is rife that a positive announcement from the VCK could pave the way for Vijay to be sworn in as Chief Minister as early as Saturday evening, although no official confirmation on the ceremony has been provided.
Amid ongoing political negotiations in Chennai, the VCK’s announcement later today is anticipated to have a significant impact on shaping the future government in Tamil Nadu.
