Vinesh Phogat marked her comeback to competitive wrestling with a dominant 7-1 victory over Jyoti in the women’s 53kg category during the Asian Games selection trials in New Delhi. This successful return followed the Supreme Court and the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) allowing her participation after intervening.
Initially restricted to the 50kg category by the WFI, Vinesh confidently began her campaign in the 53kg trials following a change in the federation’s decision, supported by WFI president Sanjay Singh. In her opening match against Jyoti, Vinesh strategically earned points early on and showcased her defensive prowess to secure a convincing win.
Vinesh’s win sets up a second-round clash with Nishu, while fellow wrestler Antim Panghal also started strongly in the trials by swiftly defeating her opponent. The dramatic turn of events in Vinesh’s participation, including the Supreme Court ruling and subsequent permission to enter the 53kg trials, culminated in her impressive performance on the mat.
