Indian cricket star Virat Kohli is poised to rejoin domestic cricket by aiming for the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025-26 for Delhi. However, fans will be unable to watch him play as Delhi’s first-round match against Andhra at M Chinnaswamy Stadium will be held without spectators. The Karnataka government is expected to instruct the KSCA to conduct matches behind closed doors, with the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence as a backup venue if needed.

The KSCA had proposed opening two stands to the public, accommodating 2000-3000 spectators, but the government rejected the idea due to potential security and compliance concerns. Efforts are underway to address these issues. The state government is keen on preventing chaos around the venue during the holiday season, especially given the presence of prominent players like Kohli and Rishabh Pant.

The BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru plays a crucial role in Indian cricket, offering top-notch infrastructure for player development. Hosting various domestic matches at the CoE provides a conducive environment for both young and experienced players to enhance their skills. If Delhi’s matches are held at the CoE, it will mark Kohli’s first competitive appearance there, creating a memorable experience for him and his teammates.

Kohli’s recent stellar performance in the ODI series against South Africa, where he scored two centuries and a half-century in three matches, is expected to boost his form in domestic cricket. He aims to make a significant impact for Delhi before returning to international cricket. Following the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Kohli is set to feature in India’s three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting on January 11.

As per BCCI regulations, centrally contracted players like Kohli must participate in domestic tournaments when not on international duty. Kohli’s involvement in the Vijay Hazare Trophy will bring valuable experience and leadership to the Delhi team. Rishabh Pant will lead the team as captain during the tournament, with Kohli playing a senior role within the squad.
