West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the transfer of 142.79 acres of land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for constructing outposts and barbed-wire fencing. Adhikari highlighted the state government’s efforts to enhance border security through this initiative.
The land allocation includes districts like Cooch Behar (22.95 acres), Jalpaiguri (35.165 acres), Darjeeling (8.815 acres), and others. This move is part of the government’s plan to hand over 500 acres of land to BSF within 45 days for border security measures.
During the first Cabinet meeting, Adhikari emphasized the need to transfer land to BSF for erecting fencing along the Bangladesh border. The decision was made to counter alleged land withholding by the previous government to deter infiltration.
The Calcutta High Court had fined a state official for delays in handing over land for barbed-wire fencing along the India-Bangladesh border. The court’s action came after complaints of non-transfer of land despite the Central government’s payment for acquisition.
