West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision to establish Appellate Tribunals for hearing voters’ appeals, viewing it as a positive development after the Election Commission’s restrictions. This move is seen as a glimmer of hope for individuals affected by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The Supreme Court directed the formation of Appellate Tribunals led by former High Court Chief Justices and Judges to address concerns over exclusions during the SIR process. The next hearing is set for March 25, with provisions for voters to rectify their status even on the eve of elections.
In response to the order, Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee highlighted the court’s role in overseeing the publication of a supplementary list, emphasizing the importance of upholding constitutional rights. Meanwhile, the BJP criticized the Trinamool Congress for allegedly creating confusion and undermining the Election Commission’s authority.
