The International Yoga Day celebrations in Kolkata, starting on June 21, were inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Adhikari participated in an inaugural marathon and a public Yoga session in central Kolkata. The event began with a marathon named “CITY OF JOY – Daud Se Dhyan 2026” in front of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation building.
The marathon, which saw a significant turnout, ended at the historic state secretariat, Writers’ Buildings. Alongside the public, Adhikari’s cabinet colleagues and BJP leader Leander Paes also joined the marathon. Following the marathon, a public Yoga session took place in front of the state secretariat, where CM Adhikari actively participated in various Yoga poses.
Expressing admiration for the participants’ energy, Adhikari emphasized the importance of integrating Yoga into daily routines for a healthier society. He lauded the event’s success and encouraged continued Yoga practice. Adhikari highlighted that Yoga should not be imposed on individuals, emphasizing its roots in West Bengal and the state government’s efforts to promote it.
The state government has planned a grand celebration for International Yoga Day on June 21 in Kolkata. The main event will be held at Red Road in central Kolkata, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance. Despite seating arrangements for 35,000 people, the administration anticipates a much larger turnout, with around 38,000 individuals already registered to participate in the program.
