The West Bengal Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Department has established two high-power committees to delineate wards within the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). The KMC, the state’s oldest municipal corporation, is set to undergo elections later this year. One of the committees, the Central Delimitation Committee, aims to enhance civic services by splitting larger wards into two separate ones. Currently, the KMC comprises 144 wards, with plans to increase this number to 200 as proposed by the BJP-led state government to enhance civic amenities.
The second committee, the Borough Delimitation Committee, will decide the allocation of wards to each borough within the KMC. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently announced that KMC elections would take place by November this year, following the festive season starting with Durga Puja in October. He also mentioned the redrawing of KMC wards before the elections, leading to the formation of these two committees for that purpose.
