The West Bengal government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, has launched a significant security and infrastructure revamp at five key government hospitals in Kolkata. Stricter surveillance and tighter access controls are being implemented across these facilities. The Kolkata Police has issued directives to SSKM Hospital, Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, National Medical College and Hospital, and Calcutta Medical College and Hospital to enforce these protocols immediately.
A senior government official mentioned on Wednesday that stringent police surveillance will be ongoing to prevent any harm to government property during minor disturbances. Those found damaging hospital property will face severe penalties and possible imprisonment under relevant laws. The security network at these major hospitals will be substantially reinforced, with wireless communication systems being installed at each hospital to ensure rapid coordination during emergencies.
Superintendents and principals of these medical colleges and hospitals will maintain direct communication with local police stations, divisional control rooms, and the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar. Additionally, hospitals have been instructed to enhance their fire safety preparedness, keeping fire extinguishers and hydrants readily available for immediate use. Joint night patrols involving police personnel and private security staff will be introduced on hospital premises.
To further bolster security, the number of security guards at these hospitals is being increased. Strict screening measures will be enforced at entry points, requiring visitors and attendants to undergo screening before entering. Unrestricted movement within hospitals will no longer be permitted, with only designated visiting hours allowed for patient relatives. Moreover, outside vehicles entering hospital campuses will face restrictions.
Authorities are planning to compile a comprehensive database of private security guards, ambulance operators, and other hospital-related personnel within the next month. Illegal parking within hospital compounds will be curbed, allowing only vehicles of patients’ families, doctors, and healthcare workers on the premises. The areas outside hospital gates will be cleared of hawkers, and helpline numbers for medical staff and patients will be prominently displayed.
