The West Bengal government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), aims to enhance the state’s tax revenue by combating corruption in the tax collection system, stated the new state Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta. Dasgupta highlighted the significant increase in revenue from stone quarries in Birbhum district within two months of the new government’s tenure, emphasizing the need to address tax collection irregularities.
Dasgupta disclosed plans for a new industrial policy and modifications in land policies to support industrial and infrastructure development in the state. He mentioned the intention to review the Urban Land (Ceiling and Regulation) Act, 1976, to optimize land usage for projects, emphasizing the importance of industrial development over commercial ventures on designated industrial lands.
The Finance Minister expressed the goal of reducing reliance on state excise for tax revenue while managing the substantial debt burden inherited by the new government. He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between the state and Union governments to drive economic growth effectively.
Dasgupta criticized the previous administration for its confrontational stance towards the Union government, stressing the need for cooperative federalism for the state’s progress. He highlighted the benefits of aligning with the Union government for economic development and public welfare, signaling a positive shift in governance approach.
In a bid to invigorate the state’s economy, the new government plans to promote a market-driven economy, allowing 24×7 operations for shops and businesses. Dasgupta projected this move to boost revenue collection, create job opportunities, and transform Kolkata into a dynamic economic hub.
